Research Program

Research programme refers to graduate programme that is wholly research based. Student is assigned to an experienced member of academic staff as supervisor or to a supervisory panel. A panel is made up of graduate staff and experts from either within or outside the University. The academic progress of research student is evaluated two times a year through progress reports. The degree is examined through the presentation of a thesis and a viva voce examination. A student who has satisfied the Graduate Studies Committee in all aspects of their work is eligible for the award of the degree. The fields of specialisations that the university offers are available within the research niche of each faculty/institute/center. Potential students are advised to look for supervisor by directly contacting them. You can prepare your research proposal following the template here.

Master by Research Programmes

Entry Requirements

(as approved by Senate Nos. 04/2020 -189)
  • A Bachelor degree with a minimum CGPA of 2.75 or equivalent, as accepted by the Senate; or
  • A Bachelor degree or equivalent with at least CGPA of 2.50 and did not achieve CGPA of 2.75, may be admitted depends on rigorous internal evaluation, or
  • A Bachelor degree or equivalent but with CGPA less than 2.50, may be admitted subject to a minimum of 5 years working experience in the relevant field.
  • Other equivalent qualifications approved by the Senate.
  • For international students, a minimum IELTS Score of 5.0 or its equivalent ( eg. TOEFL-525; TOEFL Computer Test-196; TOEFL Internet Test 69-70 or MUET Band 3) is required (as approved by Senate Nos. 01/2020 -186).
*** candidates who wish to pursue Master of Science (Computer Science) must meet the following requirements:

  • A Bachelor Degree of Computing or in the area of science and technology or related to computing, with a minimum CGPA of 3.00; OR
  • A Bachelor Degree of Computing or in the area of science and technology or related to computing, with CGPA below 3.00 but above 2.75, can be accepted subject to rigorous internal assessment process; OR
  • A Bachelor Degree of Computing or in the area of science and technology or related to computing, with CGPA less than 2.50, with a minimum of 5 years working experience in a relevant field may be accepted; OR
  • Other equivalent qualifications approved by the Senate.
  • For international students, a minimum IELTS Score of 5.5 or its equivalent ( e.g TOEFL-525; TOEFL Computer Test -196; TOEFL Internet Test 69-70 or MUET Band 3) is required (as approved by Senate Nos. 01/2020 -186).

Duration of Study

The normal duration of study for a Master's degree (by research) is (2 - 4) years full-time or (3 - 6) years part-time.

PhD by Research Programmes

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree is a research degree by thesis under the supervision of an experienced member of academic staff or a supervisory panel.A panel is made up of graduate staff and experts from either within or outside the University. The minimum duration of studies is 3 - 6 years full-time and 4 - 8 years part-time.

The academic progress of a research student is evaluated twice a year through the progress reports. Final assessment is through thesis and a viva-voce examination.

A student who has satisfied the Examination Committee for Postgraduate Studies in all aspects of their work is eligible for the award of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy.

Eligibility

a)
  • A Master Degree with good pass from an approved university in an area relevant to the candidate's proposed area of research.
  • Other equivalent qualifications approved by the Senate
  • For international students, a minimum IELTS Score of 5.0 or its equivalent (e.g TOEFL-525; TOEFL Computer Test-196; TOEFL Internet Test 69-70 or MUET Band 3) is required (as approved by Senate Nos. 04/2020 -189).
*** applicants who wish to pursue PhD (Computer Science) must meet the following requirements:

  • A Master Degree or equivalent AND candidates must have completed at least ONE (1) of their earlier Degrees (Master or Bachelor) in Computing or related to computing.
  • Other equivalent qualifications approved by the Senate
  • For international students, a minimum IELTS Score of 5.5 or its equivalent ( e.g TOEFL-525; TOEFL Computer Test -196; TOEFL Internet Test 69-70 or MUET Band 3) is required (as approved by Senate Nos. 01/2020 -186).

b)
  1. Direct Entry from Bachelor Degree Level to PhD by Research Programme
  2. A Bachelor’s Degree with minimum CGPA of 3.67 or equivalent, as accepted by Senate subject to rigorous internal assessment
  3. Other equivalent qualifications approved by the Senate

Duration of Study

For a PhD, the normal duration is (3 - 6) years full-time and (4 - 8) years part-time.
